The apoxiomenos
The original statue of Apoksiomenos
The original Apoksiomenos is a statue dating back to the III or IV century B.C. and is part of the art defined the passage between the classic and Hellenistic one.
The Croatian Apoksiomen probably dates back to a century later.
It portrays an athlete terge sweat as a representation of a winner; and it is the Croatian greatest archaeological find.
Indeed there is an entire shows inside the Archaeological Museum of Zagreb dedicated to the statue, while the original one is located in the
Museum of the Apoxyòmenos of Mali Losinj.
The discovery of the statue occurred in 1996 on the seabed of the islet of Vele Oriule, in the south-east of the island of Losinj:
the statue was for about 2000 years stuck at 44 meters of depth between two rocks, that had prevented to sink more deeply.
In 1999 the statue was finally extracted and restored with the desalting technique and the union of some of the pieces that were removed from the body.
A copy of the statue is exhibited in the gallery of the Venetian Tower in Veli Losinj.
