Susak typical dress

The traditional female costume

The typical feminine costume of Susak differs from the majority of known costumes, characterized especially for the gaudy colors that presents. Starting from the bottom, it is composed by the shoes (said “carape“) and the socks “kalcete“, which are made of wool in bright red color

The pants, “mudonde“, and the jacket “kosula“, are made with white cotton with “merlici“, decorative lace.

Also the petticoat “suknjica” is white, but decorated with colored ribbons; while the bodice, “bust“, is characterized by bright colors and floral decorations, embellished by three buttons that allow the closure

There are 6 white skirts, “kamizoti“, each a few centimeters shorter than the previous one, up to the innermost which is the shortest. Just below the apron (said “traviesla” and richly decorated with lively colors, ribbons and beads) there is the skirt “kamizot na faldice“, with more sober colors: is usually white or with red or blue longitudinal little strips, made with silk pleated by hand. Because of the complexity of the costume, there is no match with any jewel; the single accessory is the “bravaruola“, a handkerchief put around the neck, with bright colors as the apron and with long fringes.

The typical male costume it’s not particularly different from the clothes of the bourgeoisie of last century: it is composed by the canvas shoes, “pute“, the black or dark blue trousers, white shirt without collar and a black vest. The accessories used here are usually three; a wide band with an oriental fantasy linked to the belt, a necktie, and the captain cap or the French cap.
